Welcome to NARG
ur goal at NARG is to provide you with information on the fossil record for the states of Oregon and Washington. You will also find general information on the geologic history of the Pacific NW as well as information on fossil bearing formations. We are geared toward paleontology but you must have some understanding on the regional geology if you intend on collecting fossils.

Featured Fossil - Nautiloid: Aturia angustata

Pulalius vulgaris

Genus/species: Aturia angustata
Formation: Lincoln Creek
Location: SW Washington
Age: Eocene
Decription:
This beautiful assemblage of 4 jeweled Aturia was found in a small road cut exposure near Elma, WA. The concretions from this location are some of the hardest to crack. When I got the concretion home that contained these I whacked on it about 20 times but it wouldn't crack but some flaked off and exposed another weathered nautiloid.

I figured that if this rock had two maybe there would be more. I started removing matrix with my large Chicago air scribe. After a few hours I found two more but they again where close to the surface and weathered. I had hope though and worked my way closer to the center. After 6 more hours I eventually exposed these 4 nicely preserved Aturia. I decided that the other 4 needed to be removed to so these would display better. The Aturia are soft and just the slightest tough of the scribe would leave a mark. Also, only the living chambers are filled with matrix and the inner chambers are hollow so I was worried about them falling apart, but being hollow they look great when backlit.
