Search and Rescue Report

3/4/2006
SW Washington, Lincoln Creek Formation
Bill Sullivan

This month's trip was back into the Lincoln Creek Formation of SW Washington. It was also an opportunity to hook up with a few new NARG members from the area. We took off through the hills to a fairly new site on private property. This is one of the only sites I know of in the LC that produces a fair amount of Portunities triangulum crabs. Well, fair amount may be misleading. Let's say that on each trip to this site I've found one specimen, which is one more than I've found in the past two years collecting the LC. Also found are Aturia angustata and Pulalius vulgaris.

We all descended on one area of the exposure and started pecking around for concretions. Eldon pulled out the first days treasure so we all started searching harder. After a few hours we rounded up 40 or so concretions with some being the classic crab shape. About this time the head to my Paleo Pick decided to give up and split from the handle. I was left with my rock pick and after 5 minutes I gave up for the day.

I now have a nice little pile of concretions in my driveway waiting to be popped. If one contains a crab it was a successful trip for me. Of course I'm hoping for more. Come on Protunities!
